the fall fashion transition
Houston.......We Have A Problem.
It's been more than a minute since I've been with you guys. But I'm sure you're all aware of the devastation that's taken place over the past four weeks in the Houston area. Storm comes to Texas. Storm is suppose to hit Corpus Christi. Storm is not suppose to hit Houston, but was praying for Corpus Christi. Storm was suppose to give Houston rain with possible flooding. Storm brought never ending rain that caused mass transit by boats. You know the rest. I fared well during the storm, and experienced no flooding. But a lot of people cannot say the same. Houston will never be the same. I am not the same. Witnessing mass devastation in your community definitely changes you. How can it not? But the spirit of Houston tells me that in the end, Houston will be better and stronger than before the storm.
I attend a lot of events in the city, but the event I attended yesterday was special to me because it was my first event post Hurricane Harvey. It felt good to actually be outside, enjoying amazing food with fellow Houstonians and of course, fellow food lovers. The event in question was Houston Press hosted "The Morning After", a bottomless brunch event that pitted your local favorite restaurants against each other to earn your vote for the best brunch in town. The event itself was fantastic and I will feature the event in an in depth post later this week.
Today, I wanted let you know that fashion is still life and we have to get on with life. I realize that we are entering a tricky weather period that makes dressing appropriately a lot more difficult. To be frank, Houston is currently in fashion purgatory. It's October, but it's still 90 degrees outside. It's too hot to wear fall clothes and October is too late to wear cut off shorts and barely there sandals. I mean, I know you still do it. I have eyes. However, I'll give you a pass, because I understand that this unseasonably warm weather has us all shook. But my job is to offer you an alternative to an extended summer season. It's October for goodness sake. We've got to move on. Summer has taken his raggedy duffel bag and bounced. So we've got to find a way to transition to the next thing. You know that joker Summer did. We can't let him show us out.
When selecting my outfit for this event, I had a difficult time finding something to wear that was truly appropriate. This becomes a major pain because even if you do have truly transitional items in your wardrobe, in Houston, those items are still entirely too hot to wear in 90 degree weather. So the trick is to transition your summer pieces into fall looks. You can still wear floral prints and light colored hues from your summer wardrobe, as long as you start to transition the pieces around it. For yesterday's look, I opted for a frilly romper and paired it with a pair of casual Vans sneakers, which gives it more of a cool fall vibe. If it was cooler, you could easily pair this look with a leather or denim jacket and you instantly look like you're ready for fall. I also love the idea of pairing rompers with leather jackets in Houston because our mild weather doesn't present the need to be fully covered up, even in the fall. If your arms are covered, its okay to have bare legs, and vice versa. It's not cool enough to need to have both covered. And if you wanted to take this look into night, you can just replace the sneakers with strappy heels or booties and you're still the cutest dressed girl in the room. And it looks effortless. The romper I wore is old and no longer available, however this look works with virtually any romper you have in your closet. I don't know anyone who doesn't own at least one in 2017. I would also suggest you invest in a pair of plain white or black and white Vans classic sneakers. I'm really into Vans at the moment because they are easy to pair with dresses, skirts, and even cropped slacks that instantly gives you a street style look. Athleisure is still a relatively hot trend, as celebs, bloggers, and fashion girls all over are replacing their heels for sneakers, even during fashion week. Vans are a classic style that is not too bulky and it gives you a really cool effortless look. In other words, they are the old Chuck Taylors. Now, no need to throw those away, because they still have their time and place. But Vans are the shoes you simply need now. In the comments, let me know of any tips and tricks you use as you transition from summer to fall!
